Coach Field lands some great recruits his first year as the Head Coach including David Gossett, John Klauk, Russell Surber , Matt Brost , and Culley Barragan. All would be great leaders for the Horns in the future. While Jimmy Clayton only signed one non-Texan in 16 years, Coach Field signed 3 from out-of-state his first year. Gossett and Klauk were ranked 1 and 2 on the Junior circuit.

Matt Brost is the medalist in Hawaii
David Gossett is an All-American in 1999 and 2000 and the NCAA freshman of the year. He was the only freshman who made the first team. He is the medalist in three tournaments between 1998 and 1999. He won the Red River Classic shooting a tournament record 17 under par. Tiger Woods is the only collegiate golfer with a faster start than David Gossett. The Red River victory vaulted Texas to #1 in the nation.
David Gossett was the Big 12 Conference medalist and U.S. Amateur Champion in 1999. David chose Texas because of the Hornβs past success on the pro circuit. Leonard, Crenshaw, Brooks, Kite all won major pro tournaments.
On January 29, 1999, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced that Jimmy Clayton would be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

David Gosset tied an NCAA record with a 9 under par 63 and his teammate J.J. Wall shot a 65 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Golf is not like other team sports. Coach Fields canβt give the ball to the best player to win the game. Golf has no timeouts, and huddles to say letβs give the ball to David Gosset to win the game. In a true sense in golf, the best player canβt win for the team. He needs help and in 2000 those players included Barragan, Brost, Huffman, Klauk, and McEntire.
Texas won the NCAA Central regional and was in first place after the first day of play in the national championship tournament. Matt Brost led the way with a 6 under on Saturday and Gosset and Brost finished in the top 6 for best scores.

The Horns performed well in tournament play finishing ranked #6 but performed poorly at the regional tournament finishing in 18th place- not qualifying for the NCAA tournament. Klauk qualified individually for the NCAA tournament finishing in 38th place.

Jason Hartwick starts the Fall 2001 season on fire winning the Red River Classic tying a 36 hole record at the Dallas Athletic Club.
This year was the best showing for the Horns at the NCAA tournament since 1995. This was Coach Fieldβs best team since joining Texas as head coach p. For Texas, this was the 16th top 5 finish in school history. John Klauk finished his college career with a 69 to finish 13th at the NCAA tournament.
Coach Field says this yearβs team has βdepth and experienceβ. βWe have been building up to this season for 5 years, and there is every reason to think we will have a chanceβ at a national title.
John Klauk, Jason Hartwick, and Russell Surber pulled the Horns to a Big 12 victory. John Klauk was selected with 7 other college golfers to represent the country as part of the prestigious Palmer Cup.

2005-2006 Coach John Fields - Finished 2nd in the Big 12 meet
One Stroke stopped this team to advancing to the 2006 NCAA Golf Championship.
In the Fall of 2006, the Horns won the Isleworth Collegiate beating Florida, 3 of the last four NCAA team champions, and 9 of the top 15 finishers It was the first tournament win for the Horns since 2014. The Horns then won the Aloha Purdue collegiate Invitations by six strokes over Michigan. Also, defeating #1 Alabama and #8 Clemson.
Texas was one stroke away from making the NCAA national tournament finishing 11th at the regional meet.



Coach Fields changed the rules on who participates in the first seven tournaments. This year the player must qualify before each tournament. However, no guarantees are keeping all the UT golfers focused on continually improving their game.
2005-2006 Matthew Mills golf
Senior Matthew Mills won the Fall 2005 Massingill trophyβthe winner of an intrasquad tournament.
This year, the Horns moved to their new 1.2 million-dollar facility at the University of Texas Golf Club. The 5,100-square-foot academy includes locker rooms, team rooms, and academic facilities.
Golf Digest rated schools for Collegiate Golf in four areas: academics, climate, Coaches/facilities, and golf performance. Texas ranked second behind Georgia Tech.
Starters were Matthew Rosenfeld, Jeff Bell, and Matthew Mills.

The team had a great performance in the Fresno State Lexus Classic. Holland took the individual title and the team placed 2nd .
Menβs golf defeated #1 Alabama and #8 Clemson at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate Invitational. The team won 2 out of 6 tournaments.


Texas returned five lettermen from the 2006 team. Jhonattan is a co-captain of the team. Bortis, in the Fall of 2006, led the Horns to victory in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
Steve Keasler was in his 4th year as the assistant Longhorn golf coach. Steve made the jump from powerhouse Southlake Carroll High School in 2003 after leading the golfers to 5 straight Texas State Qualifiers. During his high coaching years, he produced 8 all-staters, 42 all-district golfers, and 57 academic all-district awards.
In the 2004-2005 season under Steve Keasler, the Longhorns were in the top five seven times in 14 tournaments. In the 2005-2006 season, Keaslerβs Horns led the team to five top 5 finishes in 12 tournaments. Fields said that Keasler βrelates well with the players, which, in turn, makes him a great recruiter.
