Randy was in the 1964 class with Greg Lott, Tommy Harper, me, etc. He was a guard and linebacker. But he was a very nice fellow and a good teammate. He was a Phi Gam and dated some friends of mine. Gene Powell

 (*) Randy Mack, coming out of Brownfield, Tx., was honored to play in the state high school coaches all-star game and played for DKR. When Randy announced his desire to go to art school, DKR was pure class all the way. 

 “Randy, if that’s what you truly want to do, you will be good at it,” Coach said. "Wish you the best of luck.”

 Randy never forgot those words of encouragement, and remained a Longhorn his entire life.

Randy Mack Bishop was born and raised in West Texas. Attending the University of Texas at Austin on a football scholarship, he graduated with a B.F.A. in studio art. Randy then went to the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California, graduating with honors in illustration. After graduating, he was located in the Dallas area, where he has been an artist for 34 years. In addition, he has taught at Southern Methodist University and Brookhaven College. He is married to Cathleen Bishop, a graduate of the University of Texas, and they have a son, Drew, who is a member of the UT baseball team.

His work has been featured in Governing, Pockets, Texas Sporting Journal, Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Fly Rod & Reel, and American Way. In addition, he has done work for such clients as Coopers-Lybrand, Exxon, Phillips 66, Neiman Marcus, Six Flags Over Texas, Haggar Slacks, Northern Telecom, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ottawa Citizen, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

His work has been recognized by such shows as the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, Dallas Society of Illustrators, Houston Society of Illustrators, and The Society of Newspaper Design. In addition, the Dallas Press Club presented him with its 1981 and 1993 Katie for Best Illustration Portfolio.

Eighty-five original art pieces were done while Randy was an illustrator for the Dallas Morning News reside in The Center for American History collection in Austin, Texas.

Randy continually researches his paintings by research trips to Montana, Colorado, Canada, Alaska, and Africa. As an avid conservationist, Randy has participated in such fundraising groups as Gulf Coast Conservation Association, Ducks Unlimited, and Texas Fly Fishing Conclave.

His son Drew was a pitcher for the Horns, but underwent Tommy John surgery that limited his college mound duty. Drew was on the UT roster when the Horns won the 2005 national title and has long since served on the athletic department staff in baseball operations.

Perfect, Billy! I remember vividly our first day of 1964 Freshmen football practice and meeting for the first time my fellow teammates! We were at Clark Field & dressed in shorts, helmets, shoulder pads & football shoes! There were 50 four-year scholarship players, 25 one-year scholarship players & 10 plus walk-ons! Almost everyone was an All stater from 4A, 3A, 2A & even 6 man football! Wow, great memories! Randy was an All-State linebacker from Brownfield, TX and he could hit you hard! He had a full head of hair and was one of the nicest guys you could ever know! He will be sorely missed for sure! Rest In Peace, Randy! Tom Harper

Biographical Note

Randy Mack Bishop is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He was the former art director for the Dallas Times Herald and is an editorial illustrator for the Dallas Morning News.

The Randy Mack Bishop papers, 1990-2004, contain original art prints and tearsheet prints, photographs from the Dallas Morning News, pages of "Forgotten Dallas" series with Bishop's illustrations, and pages from other newspaper editorial and opinion pages featuring Bishop's work.
