Men finish 2nd in the SWC and 20th at the NCAA championships

Sam Ngatia was 8th nationally In The Steeplechase in 1984 and 2nd in 1985.

Patrick Sang won the conference in the steeplechase in 1984, 1985, and 1986 and holds the Texas record in the 3,000 Steeplechase outdoors.

The women win the Cross Country Title and are undefeated for the season- 1986

Terry Crawford's teams wins the  Indoor Championship in 1986, 1988, and 1990, and Outdoor Championships in 1982 and 1986. Crawford's athletes also win the 1986 Women's Cross Country Championship.

Terry Crawford Is The Only Woman  Inducted Into The Hall Of Honor In The Cross Country Category.

Trina Leopold earned All American Honors at the national meet.

Liz Natale is 8th in the 3000 meters at the NCAA outdoor championship in 1987 and 2nd in 1986.   She is 4th in the indoor championship.

Sandy Blakeslee is 2nd in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA outdoor championship in 1987 and 8th in 1986. She holds the school record in this event.

Finished 2nd in the SWC but the Horns had 3 of 5 of the top finishers but tied for first at the regionals. 

Pablo Squella holds the Texas record in the 1000 meter.

 

1987-Coach Crawford and Coach Huntsman

 1987-1988 men's cross country - UT finished 18th, setting a record for the team's 4th consecutive top 20 ranking.  Two-time All-American Harry Green gave Texas its first individual title since 1973 at the SWC meet and finished 3rd at the national meet.  It was the best Longhorn finish  since 1956 .  Horns had an 11-match winning streak but placed 3rd  at the SWC meet.

Harry Scott Green Is The Only 3 Time All-American Cross Country Runner In Texas History.  6th In The 10,000 in 1986, 87, and 88. He also wins the Conference Championship  in the Cross Country

Led by Trina Leopold and Kelly Champagne women runners win the SWC and finish 4th nationally. 

 

1988-Coach Crawford and Coach Huntsman

The women’s Cross-Country team finished 16th in the NCAA meet. This team expected a better year, but injuries plagued it all year. Plus, their coach was not with them. Coach Crawford was with the Olympic team in South Korea.   Tina Hall led the team this year.  One shining moment was the victory at the regional meet.  

Women were 2nd in the SWC meet .



Trina Leopold is 5th in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championship and 2nd in the Indoor Championship in 1989, and 4th in 1988.

Harry Green and Jeff Cannada  help the team to a 2nd place finish in the SWC and 12th place nationally.  Coach Huntsman returned to Longhorn coaching after spending September and October at the the Seoul Olympics.

1989 – Tina Hall led the women to win their 4th SWC and qualify for the NCAA championship. The Horns placed 19 out of 22 teams.

Men finish 2nd at the NCAA District VI meet and for the 10th year qualify for the NCAA meet finishing 14th.

Men’s C.C. finished second in the NCAA District VI competition and qualified for the NCAA championship for the 10th consecutive time. The Horns were missing runners for the NCAA tournament due to injury and placed 14th in a field of 22 teams. For the first time in 12 years, the Horns edged out the Razorbacks to earn the NCAA championship birth.

Women 1990

Horns are plagued with injuries. Shola Lynch has a stress fracture, and Tina Hall, an All-American in 1989, was forced to redshirt. The team did not have the required 5 runners to complete, so they were ineligible to compete for the SWC championship or qualify for the NCAA meet.

Men Rank 4th nationally

In SWC competition the Horns place one point Arkansas. All-American Sisson led the Horns.

4th place finish at the NCAA meet is the best since 1956, but the Horns still lose to Arkansas for the 10th time in 11 years.

Noyes Livingston wins the conference title in the steeplechase in 1990 and 1991 and finishes 6th at the National meet in 1991.

Men- SWC Champs and finished 7th in the nation

In the NCAA championship the Horns finished 7th. It was the 3rd best finish in Longhorn sports history. The runners train by running 70 to 80 miles a week.

Finished 7 in the nation, but this was their 3rd best record in Longhorn Cross Country's history. The men ran 80 miles a week to maintain the great tradition started by their predecessors. The team was led by Steve Sisson, Alex Mendosa, Patterson, Vela, and Angell.


Women- Second in the SWC

Davina Manship and Tina Hall led the team, which was both invited to the National meet. Over the last eight years, Coach Crawford turned the women’s cross-country teams around. She received the honor of National Coach of the Year in 1991 for the sixth time.

Tina Hall finishes 7th in the Indoor National championship.

Men’s Finished 22nd at the NCAA meet

The season starts looking dismal with the loss of Mendoza for the year but ends on a great note. Texas joins Wisconsin and Arkansas as the only teams to be invited to 10 consecutive NCAA Cross Country Championships. Eric Polonski after only two meets is named the “Runner of the week for District VI.

Mardela was the leader of the team. Hyman was a natural and loved running 6 to 7 miles a day. She qualified for the National meet, but an unfortunate accident with another runner in the national meet resulted in her placing 158th out of 163.

1993 Men’s Cross Country - 22nd Nationally - won the Conference championship

1993  Cross country -Sisson took 5th at the national championship in the 10,000 meters. Steve wins the SWC in the 5000 meters and sets a conference record making the All-American team.

In the national meet Steve Sisson finished 3rd in the 5000 meter shattering the school record by 8 seconds.

Hyman and Robin Bryson have their top times in regionals and as a team finishes 5th. Hyman is the only individual invited to the NCAA championships.

Men’s Cross Country

Kamiel Maase is All American In Cross Country. He finishes 7th In The 5000 in 1994, and 2nd in the 10,000 in 1995. He also is the conference champion in the cross country in 1994. 

Team places 2nd in the SWC and 3rd out of 32 teams in the NCAA regionals, . Kamiel Masse leads the team all year long and finishes 4th at nationals.

1994 Cross country -  Maase won the SWC championship over a 5-mile terrain.  In the national meet, Maase finished 4th .

Ryan Gauna finished 5th in the 5000 meters at the indoor SWC meet.

1997- Texas had 3 of the top 5 five finishes this season.   Shawn Flanagan is the first-year coach for Cross Country. The Horns finished 3rd at the NCAA regionals just missing an NCAA championship round.

1998 Cross Country -  Coach Shawn Flanagan team wins three meets but does not make the NCAA championship meet.    Chris Wells and Ben Dawson are the leaders of the team.  The Horns finished 4th at the Big 12 meet.

2000- cross Country – new head coach Jason Vigilante took the Horns to the National Championship since 1996.  Texas finished 2nd at the NCAA regional even.  Kevin Barra finished second or third among UT  runners in every race he competed in.  Horns finished 4th at the Big 12 meet, 2nd in the NCAA regional meet , 22nd in the National meet.

National meet- Ben Dawson set a school – record by nearly 9 seconds and finished 3rd in the 5000 m.   Morrison finished 14th at the national meet to earn All-American status.

Kevin Barra was the first All-American in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12 years. By finishing 8th Kevin scored points for the Horns for the first time since Noyes Livingston scored in 1991.

The Horns posted three All-Americans – Christian with two and  Barra with one.    In the 10,000 meters John Rainbolt and Jon Birt finish 3 and 4 respectively.    

Big 12 championship Texas placed 5th with 150 points .

Paul Morrison earned All-Big 12 honors and was named the league male newcomer of the year.   At the regional meet, the Horns faltered but Morrison became the first Longhorn since Harry Green in 1998 to win a regional gold and advance to the NCAA championship.

Zach Zeller wins the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 3000-meter steeplechase. 

Texas place 6th in the distance medley relay with Ponsonby, Zeller, Arnold, and Collins.  It was the Horn’s best finish in this event at the indoor championship in school history.

 Zach Zeller won the Big 12 conference crown in the 3,000 – meter steeplechase. Mark Floreani finished as runner-up.

Horns under Coach Jason Vigilante finished 2nd  at the Big 12 Championship and the NCAA South Central Regional and placed 12th  at the NCAA championship.  The best finish since 1991.

With 2005 and 2006 7th place finish in Cross Country the Horns placed in the top 10 in the national track and field meets.

2006 Cross Country -   Photo is Joe Thorne – finished 7th at the championships. At one time, they were ranked in the top 3.   Coach Jason Vigilante and trickster Joe Thorne were great motivators for the team.

2006 – Cross Country – At the regional NCAA meet Texas scored 51 points and placed 6 runners on the NCAA South regional team (Manzano, Middleton, Stanley, Thorne, Washburn, and Jake Morse).  Horns finish in the Top 10 nationally for the second consecutive season.   

The long-distance -medley relay team of Wykes, Bean, Finol, and Manzano are the first  Horns to win this race.  Horns finish as runner-ups in the Big 12 championship meet and 7th at the national meet. .  Joe Thorne makes the All – American list. He is the 3rd Longhorn to earn multiple cross country All-American honors since 1954.

The twins give credit to their level of consistency and confidence to UT assistant coach and former Longhorn All-American Steve Sisson, who was hired to coach the distance runners. Sisson is a former Longhorn All-American runner for UT.

"[Sisson] really understands the cross-country team dynamics," said Lige. "He knows how to adjust workouts so we don't overdo our training week-to-week.".

The twins conceded that the sibling rivalry helped them reach new highs in performance.

2007  cross country men finished 17 at the NCAA meet.  

Women and men had a good year. Women were strong at the Big 12 meet and 5th at the regional meet. Betty Jimenez was the Longhorn’s highest qualifier at regionals with a 15-place finish. She was NCAA All-South regional. The men had a top 20 finish with Manzano finishing 27th in the nation.

This was the 4th year the Horns finished in the top 20 at the NCAA tournament. Texas finished 2nd in the South Central regional meet. Horns place 17th at the national meet.

In the Big 12 outdoor meet, Andrew Middleton finishes 2nd in the 10,000-meter run.  He was an All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American distance runner for the University of Texas Longhorns and First Team Academic All-Big XII in Cross Country and Track & Field. Andrew trained under Jason Vigilante while at the University of Texas and under Greg McMillan as part of his Olympic-Development Team.

In women’s cross country, Betzy Jimenez led the team to two wins and its highest finish in the Big 12 Championship since 2002. Betsy Jimenez made the All-Big 12 team.

In the men’s, Texas won the Texas State Invitational and second at the Fiesta Texas Classic. Jake Morse, Kyle Miller, and Victor Gras led the team that finished 6th at the Big 12 championship

The distance medley relay team of Erik Stanley,  Danzell Fortson, Hernandez, and Manzano shatter the Big 12  record.    At the Outdoor NCAA championship the Longhorns distance medley relay brought home the first relay national title in Texas program history.

Ranked 28th nationally in Men's Cross Country

The University of Texas men’s cross country squad has a great start this year by opening the season with two straight team titles. It's the first time the Longhorns have done so since 2002 and the two victories also mark the third year in a row that the team wins at least two meets.

In the Big 12 meet the Horns finish 5th with Tunningley leading the charge. At the regional meet, Texas places 2nd, and at the national meet led by Berhane, the Horns finish 28th.


 

 

Jake Morse is 4th nationally in Steeplechase, and he is an All American 2006, 2008, and 2009.

 

 

At the indoor meet for the NCAA championship the distance medley relay team 4th tallying 5 points to help Texs finish 10th at the national meet. The relay team members were Tevan Everett, Hernandez, Jake Morse and Danzell Forston.  

 

 

 

Senior Betzy Jimenez and sophomore Mia Behm will represented the Longhorns in the   2009 NCAA Cross Country Championship.

 

 

-Behm and Jimenez are the Longhorns' first two qualifiers for the national meet since 2003 when Texas won the regional championship.

-UT women are coming off a very strong 2008 season that saw the Horns place fourth at the Big 12 Championships, their highest finish since 2003, en route to a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Regional Championship. Top returning harriers for the 2009 season are seniors Betzy Jimenez, Asia Myrland, Lauren Salisbury, and sophomore Mia Behm.

  • Athur Ash Sports Scholar an award is presented to international students or students of color who participated in intercollegiate athletics and achieved a GPA above 3.2 in the academic year at Texas.

  • USATFCCA All-Academic Honor was presented to Johannes in 2014. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and participate in the NCAA outdoor championships.

In 2015,  Sandie Raines won the Big 12 Conference title outdoors in the 5,000 meters. Raines also earned first-team All-America honors indoors in the 5,000.
